This stunning blue and white piece is perfect whether you are a collector of grocer/dairy ironstone or an advanced collector seeking something special. Measuring 13" in diameter and 9.5" high, it is smaller than most pails. "Pure Milk" pails rarely surface, and those that do are usually larger. This particular pail stands out not only due to its smaller size but also because of its exceptional condition. The transfer is clean and detailed, although it does not feature an image of a cow, which is uncommon for such pails. The words "Pure Milk" are boldly printed in block letters, maintaining clarity and sharpness.

The base of the pail has molded bands/ribbing indicative of barrel staves, a motif sometimes seen on foot baths and pitchers. Nicely molded handles are applied to each side of the pail. Pure Milk pails were used commercially in grocery stores or dairies to hold milk that had been separated from the cream, with another nearby pail holding the cream. Other commercial pieces labeled "New Milk" contained milk prior to cream separation. During the 1800s, other commercial items such as Pure Butter, Margarine, Butter, and unlabeled slabs were also present. These pieces were quite special even in their time.

Few Pure Milk pails were produced, and even fewer exist today, especially without damage. This pail, remarkably free of damage and staining, is a rare find. It is an exceptional piece for an advanced collector or anyone looking for a special item. Perfect for a kitchen or sideboard, it can serve as a decoration or hold fruit. Please see our other listings for additional grocer or dairy slabs. We professionally package and can easily, safely ship any item, fully insured, within the US.
